Road trips, Discipline & Football
I'm back and writing a second post on this here blog. It's dangerous and exciting and I want to do more things that rattle my being. But we must start at the beginning...what does uncomfortable mean to me? First, let's talk about what's not uncomfortable. Road trips are a great example. One time I drove from Colorado Springs to Pittsburgh and back without any motels stays. It was a solid 24 hour drive with a focused mission - to pick up a dog. I can say the last 3 hours of that trip was physically uncomfortable, however, I did not hesitate to jump into this quest and light the open road on fire!
For our honeymoon, John and I did a road trip from Colorado Springs to Key West and back. Fantastic! Along the trip we stopped at a winery in Missouri, Beale Street in Memphis, cotton fields in the middle of rural Georgia, and of course Disney and Harry Potter world (as I call it). We made our way down through Florida to the very very tip just in time to catch the fabled green flash in historic Key West. Back up through the Everglades to St. Petersburg (Hi sister, niece and nephew!) then onto New Orleans. Vampires and spooky graveyards, beignets and trolleys - we did it all! After sixteen days we made it back home.
I love that kind of adventure and traveling. It's easy for me. So what's not easy? What's uncomfortable for Melanie? Wellllll I guess it's time to get vulnerable - time to creak the closet door open and let it out. But this is good. Being open will encourage me to tackle the opponent in this game of life. They are probably my best teachers, though, and when I make them my friends, we can happily walk off the field hand in hand.
...and now, I suppose I have to tell you...
Lets start with - Discipline/ Consistency / Sticktoittiveness - there are just some things in life one can not have with out these qualities. For example, I was forced into keeping the house we bought because financially we couldn't get out of it. Ten years passed, we paid down a chunk of the mortgage and the value went up. Because of being forced into the dreaded rut of staying in the same place, we were able to pay off all of our credit card debt and make many upgrades on the house. So Awesome! Imagine if I would have stayed in college (4 different times) or or stuck with my personal trainer or started writing 10 years ago? I'm not beating myself up...not by a long shot. Life is a process and I know I'm exactly where I should be but by recognizing the 'what ifs' I'll be able to use them as motivation to run the distance.
Sprints are easy and road trips are just like sprints. I've always been good at a concentrated short burst of fun or focus even when the adventure isn't always favorable. Some things about traveling aren't so great, like sitting for long periods of time, road rage and staying every night in a bed that's not your own, but, you know it's only for a couple days or weeks so those pills are easy to swallow. The meteorological tech school I went to was another sprint - a couple months of training and BAM! I have a new career...which didn't last as technology took over my job. If I would have gotten the four year degree, I could be chasing tornadoes for a living!
I'm learning that the easy button doesn't really work and discipline, who is just sitting on the sidelines waiting for the opportunity, wants to facilitate the win. It's time I put her on the field. GAME ON!! Now I just need to decide which games I want to play...
